On July 1, 2026, nearly 200 volunteers and community members from Edmonton’s Chinese community gathered in the City of Camrose to celebrate the 10th annual Canada Day Drumming Festival. Organized by the National Congress of Chinese Canadians (Edmonton Chapter) in partnership with several community organizations, the festival celebrated Canada’s national holiday through drumming, cultural performances, and the spirit of multicultural inclusion. The event was funded by the Government of Alberta.
Held at Max McLean Arena, the event drew enthusiastic audiences with continuous applause and celebration throughout the day. Distinguished guests included Camrose Mayor PJ Stasko, Camrose constituency MLA Jackie Lovely, Dr. Donald Yu (President of the National Congress of Chinese Canadians – Edmonton Chapter), City Councillors, and representatives from various sectors, who delivered remarks reflecting on Canada’s 159-year history, emphasizing the values of diversity and inclusion, and acknowledging the Chinese community’s contributions to fostering cultural exchange.
One of this year’s highlights was the innovative collaborative performance featuring Traditional Chinese Drumming and Indigenous Dance. The Hong De Cultural & Athletic Association delivered powerful, rhythmic Chinese drumming, while local Indigenous performers brought the spirit of the land to life through their expressive dance movements. The two ancient cultures resonated in a remarkable dialogue of rhythm and movement, bringing the performance to an electrifying climax and vividly embodying the vision of multicultural harmony.
In addition to this unique collaboration, the Chinese community presented a variety of traditional cultural performances, including a Chinese instrumental ensemble, a qipao fashion show, Tai Chi, and a lion dance. Local residents also showcased Indigenous traditions and other multicultural performances. The diverse program drew continuous rounds of applause and cheers from the audience. Community organizations such as ICAN Seniors Association also actively participated in the event.
Beyond celebrating Canada Day, the festival strengthened the friendship between Edmonton and the City of Camrose while laying a solid foundation for future cultural exchanges and collaboration. The National Congress of Chinese Canadians (Edmonton Chapter) remains committed to using the Drumming Festival as a platform to foster mutual understanding, celebrate cultural diversity, and help build a more inclusive and harmonious Canada.
